Self-Publishing Benefits and Pitfalls
What you don’t know about self-publishing could let you down. I have run the rocky road to self-publishing, and now my book is selling in bookstores world-wide today. But in the process I encountered time-consuming dead ends and costly errors, simply because I didn’t know the publishing industry.
Why an eBook?
Many first-time authors email me with their publishing questions. While I love to answer those emails, I cannot cover everything, so I thought “why not put all my real-life, getting-it-done book publishing problems in an eBook”. These are the things that aren’t covered even in the good self-publishing courses available.
And to keep you motivated, I put in my best tips for a relaxed and productive writing experience, particularly for when you encounter ‘writer’s block’.
Here are some of the areas where I explain what’s important:
- Book Design and Sizing
- Cover Design & Why Branding is important
- Types of Editing and How to Choose an Editor
- What to check before you choose an ISBN
- Important choices for Distribution
- Marketing tips (including online media) and endorsements
- What to do after your book is completed.
In the rear of the eBook I have a complete list of the resources I used and a variety of Print on Demand publishers for self-publishers. This will save you much money searching through the Internet and possibly getting lured by a vanity publisher, someone who takes your money quite happily to publish your book, but doesn’t give you success on a plate.

Self-Publishing Benefits & Pitfalls Testimonials:
I found Jen Hall’s “Self-Publishing Benefits and Pitfalls” booklet a very informative and practical guide to getting started on a writing project, and would recommend it to first time authors who want to be published, as a valuable resource for the following reasons:
- Jen’s guide is a very informative resource for first time writers, who are wanting to share their “message” with others, or who are wanting to release new ideas/theories into the marketplace. It not only provides the writer with some specific starting points for the actual writing process; but also delineates the broader vision of what producing a book involves.
- For a first time author, I would rate procrastination, lack of expertise in a new field of endeavour and a general ‘fear’ of the unknown as very real deterrents to getting started on a writing project. Jen’s educational booklet helps to reduce these less than constructive factors, and provide a launching pad, for those who wish to begin the journey of becoming an author.

“Having worked with Jen personally on her first book ‘Success is Simply Spiritual’ I have seen the process from start to finish. KISS Principle of Self-Publishing Benefits and Pitfalls is easy to follow with real and relevant information – If you have ever thought of self publishing, then this is the guide for you!”
– Glenn Bird
When I first saw Self-Publishing Benefits and Pitfalls, I thought back to when I was going down the self-publishing path – what an experience! I certainly could have used this kind of advice, especially while writing the book, as you have to decide distribution and promotional aspects before your book’s release. While I told her that she could sell it for much more, Jen wishes to help others become aware of the self-publishing pitfalls.
